Authority Favicon

Owning a website means also taking care of its image and branding. If your business image is important to you, you should consider adding a favicon. Without it, your website can be harder to find through the browser tabs, especially when multiple tabs are active. The icon is a great way to make a statement, because it appears in the search tab, next to your URL, and it represents your website in the bookmark, too.

What is a favicon?

The favicon is the little icon that browsers display next to a page’s title. It appears on a browser tab or in the address bar next to its URL. The icon is also used when you bookmark a page.

Take a look at these examples:

Why is the favicon important?

It is especially important for you site’s branding and recognition. It’s easily recognized this way in a browser full of tabs and it completes the image of your brand. If you don’t create and use a favicon, you’ll be subjected to a generic one your webhost provides. Unfortunately, this is neither user friendly, nor search engine friendly. Not to mention, your branding will be affected as you’ll have the same icon as thousands of other sites. You might get users confused, annoyed and their loyalty and interest in you will depreciate.

How to add a favicon to your website

It’s really easy to add a favicon for your website.

Size:

The images should be 16 x 16 pixels. You can resize an existing photo, or create a tiny graphic to use especially for this purpose. I suggest you avoid resizing existing photos, because you’ll be taking away important details or make a fuzzy image.
Graphics:

The image is 256 pixels, so you have to make clear decisions about what you’d be including in the icon. You can use your logo, which is great for branding. If it doesn’t show right, you can opt for your site’s or business’ name, or the first letters of it. You can use icons that show what your site does, stands for or represents. (Twitter uses the famous blue bird.)

Image Format:

Theys must use the icon file format (.ico). There are easy free services which can convert images to this type of format. The .ico format supports transparency, so you don’t have to limit yourself to the square format. If you want, you can use the .gif or .png file format when creating your image, to take advantage of the transparency feature.

Tools

You can use favicon.cc, which is great for creating an icon for your website, without too much work on your side. You’ll only have to import the image, preview it and save it.

Now you know how to create such icons for your site, so that you’ll be more easily found and remembered.
