SEO Empty Description

26 Feb 2018

It’s only natural to want your web page/ blog posts/ articles and any content that is live on the Internet to attract traffic. You can only do this by optimizing every single detail of your content. This being said, don’t forget about meta descriptions. If you want to have direct impact on click-behavior, you should fix empty descriptions and then optimize them. Attractive, compelling and relevant descriptions directly influence the way people see your website in the list of reviews made by search engines. In order to engage people and make them click on your articles, you need your meta descriptions to be optimized.

What are meta description tags?

They are HTML attributes which provide a concise explanations of the content of your articles/web pages. They are commonly used on search engine result pages in order to display preview snippets for a given page.

Example (HTML):

<meta name="description" content="This is an example of a meta description. You'll see this in search engine results.">

Why are they important?

Meta keyword tags are not important and you shouldn’t spend time on them. Almost no search engine uses them and people don’t really see them, so they are not helpful for your SEO strategy.

Meta description tags, on the other hand, are essential for gaining user clicks. By them you can influence traffic and conversion rates. They are short paragraphs that are an opportunity to advertise content to searchers and to give them the exact information about what the web page contains. This way they’ll know when to click on your page.

The problem of empty meta descriptions

If all the pages on your site have meta descriptions, the ranking on search engines of your site will be improved. Almost all the major search engines like Yahoo, Google, Fast and Altavista will use your meta description. Empty descriptions are to be avoided, because if, for example, you have pages that display other content than text, the meta description will be the text returned to the web surfer.
