What does page encoding mean?

It is considered a good practice to declare the encoding of your website. By doing that, a browser will be able to switch to the proper encoding, and show the characters in a proper way, without messing with them. This html encoding meta tag helps you specify the media type (text or html), and the character set.

Why is it important?

Since different languages have different character sets, specifying the language and character encoding can prevent problems with the rendering of special characters, and your browser will display pages in a correct form. Even though this tag does not influence your website’s ranking on search engines, it influences the way customers validate your website.

How to use page encoding

The tag for the page encoding is placed in the header. There are two common values that you can use:

  • UTF-8 – it’s the character encoding for Unicode
  • ISO-8859-1 – character encoding for the Latin alphabet

Even though you can use one or the other, not all browsers will be able to understand them, so it’s better to use a character as widely as you can. The encoding tag stands after the charset attribute. It should look like this:

<meta charset=“UTF-8”>

The charset attribute replaces <meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=UTF-8″>.
