This is why more and more environmental activists are pushing the idea that only organic food is good for you. While it is true that it has a lot of benefits to offer when it comes to your health, you also need to keep in mind that nothing in life is perfect.
If you want to make a smart investment, both for your wallet and your health, then you need to understand the pros and the cons. Otherwise you just risk regretting your decision later on. So, instead of just focusing on the benefits, let’s check out what the drawbacks of organic food are:
Chemical-Free Is Not Always a Good Thing
Plenty of people like to rave about how chemicals are ruining our food and how non-organic produces cannot be trusted, since they are poison. However, this is not true. While non-organic food does contain less nutrients, it is overall more efficient.
Keep in mind the use of pesticides is not actually kept in check, so there really isn’t any sure way of knowing if they are being used or not. However, if pesticides weren’t used at all, then you’d definitely have to deal with infestation issues, something that farmers simply can’t afford to deal with.
Moreover, since synthetic fertilizers aren’t being used, organic food does not come in large crop sizes, meaning that it is less efficient and less productive. You need to understand that organic produces alone won’t be able to keep the entire world fed.

One last thing worth mentioning is the fact that organic produces don’t last as long as their non-organic counterparts. They will actually spoil at a faster rate because of the lack of chemical preservatives. You might think this is the way it should be and you’re right. But in our modern and almost overpopulated world it simply won’t do. Not to mention that it’s also bad investment-wise.
Organic Food Will Definitely Put a Strain On Your Wallet
As mentioned above, since farmers don’t use chemicals when it comes to organic produces, the crop size will be relatively smaller than its non-organic counterparts. Consequently, they will charge way more money when it comes to selling them, since they need to get a decent return on their investment. Keep in mind that a lot of manual labor goes into organic farming, since no chemical weed killers are used.
Not only will organic food set you back from a financial point of view, but it is also not as widely available as non-organic produces. This is because some types of produces are extremely difficult to grow if the climate conditions are not compatible. This means some organic produces need to be grown elsewhere and shipped to certain areas. Since they spoil faster, few of them will survive the journey and make it onto the shelves.
Ironically, this kind of defeats the purpose of supporting locally-grown food, since most of it comes from distant places.
